I think, over the years, the responsibilities of a Front-end developer has changed essentially because of tools like AngularJS, React, Backbone etc. Imho (and this is completely debatable), Front-end developers were basically “web designers”.
With the advent of Javascript frameworks, Front-end development is becoming a lot more complex and so are the responsibilities. However, this helps to bridge the salary gap between back-end and front-end developers.
