Hello,
Over a decade ago, the IBA was set up. One of its objectives was to
"promote the development of broadcasting services which are
responsive to the needs of the Mauritian audience;". The regulatory
approach in combination with internet access encouraged people to
access online services which are not heavily regulated. There has
also been a decline in the number of (local) TV viewers over the
years as it is faster to get the latest news and entertainment online.
The media in some other countries is vibrant in comparison with what
we see on the island. I was reading about Orange Street News (
http://orangestreetnews.com ). That's a monthly newspaper published
by a person who is 8 years old. Some vlogs have a wider audience
than local media companies. There has been a change on the island as
local media companies turned to youtube.com to broadcast local events.
There is the technology to do interesting stuff. The archaic
regulation is only useful to people who do not understand how the
internet works.
