Hi Rehan,
I enjoyed reading your analysis about latency in Reunion Island. The
Abstract mentions that: "Typically, the minimal delay between France
and Reunion Island is around
180 ms". I did a quick test and got the following results:
PING lb01-1.nic.fr (192.134.5.24): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.134.5.24: icmp_seq=0 ttl=51 time=209.301 ms
64 bytes from 192.134.5.24: icmp_seq=1 ttl=51 time=206.201 ms
64 bytes from 192.134.5.24: icmp_seq=2 ttl=51 time=205.925 ms
64 bytes from 192.134.5.24: icmp_seq=3 ttl=51 time=206.022 ms
64 bytes from 192.134.5.24: icmp_seq=4 ttl=51 time=206.352 ms
--- lb01-1.nic.fr ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/std-dev = 205.925/206.760/209.301/1.310 ms
PING www.ovh.fr (198.27.92.16): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 198.27.92.16: icmp_seq=0 ttl=54 time=238.254 ms
64 bytes from 198.27.92.16: icmp_seq=1 ttl=54 time=237.873 ms
64 bytes from 198.27.92.16: icmp_seq=2 ttl=54 time=238.261 ms
64 bytes from 198.27.92.16: icmp_seq=3 ttl=54 time=237.617 ms
64 bytes from 198.27.92.16: icmp_seq=4 ttl=54 time=238.024 ms
--- www.ovh.fr ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/std-dev = 237.617/238.005/238.261/0.663 ms
It would be very unlikely to see a latency below 200 ms between
Mauritius and France.
Your article states that: "However, most of the residents of Reunion
Island experience a slow internet connection with frequent
outages". However, it does not provide any references for that.
I was surprised to read the following statement in the article:
"Despite the presence of two submarine cables to access the Internet,
Reunion Island is a slave of France". Isn't most of the content from France?
