Well, good evening everyone :)

Congratulations to the Prodigious team, that is our fellow friend, Sun (I guess he was the lead in the team). Actually, I liked idea pretty much, their concept was unique and as mentioned earlier, they coded everything from scratch.

I was part of the first WebCup in Mauritius, the WebCup 2013 [1] where we had Sun himself as my team mate and I know his capabilities, that’s why he won the event :) Sun is a very good front end dev and coordinator too :)

You know, this thing won’t stop, that is, the problem of using templates. It’s a problem at the level of juries or the management. They have to set “standards” and criterions upon which sites should be designed. This is where the WebCup is failing.

As far as I know, the event is categorized in two groups, Professional & Amateurs. It’s the amateur participants who create trouble most of the time. Meanwhile, some just go there “For Fun” – This is something stated by the participants (Many will get offended by this, sorry). For fun? Meaning you just waste 24 hours of your life for fun? 24 hours x Rs 800 = Rs 19,200 :) I wouldn’t do so.

Moreover, most of the so called noobish “web developers” who participated were driven with the target of winning ! But a good developer won’t think like this. You need to accept things in life. You win if you are good not an “Athal” [2]

If you are a good developer, you should be able to come with something unique, genuine and use your creativity but unluckily many are experts in Reverse Engineering here. TEMPLATES! Let’s install that thing and start customizing asap !

The root cause of the problem is with the developer themselves, they lack skills, maturity, expertise, knowledge, they don’t know how things are done. I wonder how many used SVN or Git during the event? :P That’s how you show you are using your tools and being efficient.

It’s a total frustration when you see an idiot picking a template while you are just developing from scratch. I know that part, I went through this. Many claimed, you are ALLOWED to use templates (Just to on basis of supporting their fellow friend, Oh the irony!)

Reviews? I wrote one 2 years ago but from responses, I couldn’t see much improvement. Things are getting worst here ! I won’t say it’s about “Money” but “they” are promoting web development in the wrong way!

I could make a team of hardcore developers but I find it a waste of time by seeing all this.

I am only happy that the people who strived won the event.

Hi guys

Same as every year the webcup went as planned :)

It was fun spending 24h in a rooms with people working on websites

Is it like a hackathon or a development competition ? certainly not !

It is just a good experience for students or bunch of friends working on a project and pitching it in front of a jury.

Hi Vincent.

Ish reported that some teams literally strip the author's name from a template and replaced it with their own.

I think that it's very important to prevent this from happening. As I said, It's not a problem if they take someone's else work and modify it. But it's clearly a clear violation of copyright, if they strip the author's name.

There was a similar case where it attracted significant criticism for Mauritius:

http://www.getoto.net/noise/2011/06/27/unbelievable-statements-in-gpl-related-case-in-the-supreme-court-of-mauritius/

I think that it's important that the jury checks for violations such as those above as it is an embarassment for Mauritius, and the Local IT community.
