Dear Mrs Quenette,

I am writing to you as Ms Bhujun contacted me to ask for advice about
the reply which she received regarding a latency test to
www.facebook.com. I did a latency test to www.facebook.com by doing
what is known as a "ping". The ping output was:

   PING 31.13.67.36 (31.13.67.36): 56 data bytes
   64 bytes from 31.13.67.36: icmp_seq=0 ttl=87 time=73.047 ms
   64 bytes from 31.13.67.36: icmp_seq=1 ttl=87 time=73.467 ms
   64 bytes from 31.13.67.36: icmp_seq=2 ttl=87 time=73.425 ms
   64 bytes from 31.13.67.36: icmp_seq=3 ttl=87 time=72.709 ms
   64 bytes from 31.13.67.36: icmp_seq=4 ttl=87 time=75.929 ms
   64 bytes from 31.13.67.36: icmp_seq=5 ttl=87 time=72.671 ms
   --- 31.13.67.36 ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 6 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
   round-trip min/avg/max/std-dev = 72.671/73.541/75.929/1.133 ms

This is the traceroute output:

traceroute to 31.13.67.36 (31.13.67.36), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets

In your reply to Ms Bhujun, you explained that: "The round trip delay
(PING or latency) is beyond the control of MT due to the fact the
servers are located globally and the routing of traffic is dynamic on
the global Internet backbone". I did not notice any change in
routing between the Mauritius Telecom network and Malaysia during the
last few days. The www.facebook.com server which Orange Mauritius
customers get has 31.13.67.36 as the IP address and there wasn't any
change of IP address.

I would be grateful if Mauritius Telecom could review the explanation
which you sent to Ms Bhujun as it does not explain why the test
result showed a latency which was at least eight times slower than to
the above.

S. Moonesamy
